How to Set Up Monitors on an L-Shaped Desk (2026)

On an L-shaped desk, your monitor should sit so the top of the screen is at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away. The tricky part is that a corner desk has two surfaces at different depths, so a fixed riser rarely keeps both screens right. An adjustable monitor arm is the easiest way to get it comfortable and keep it that way.

Why is monitor height trickier on an L-shaped desk?

A straight desk gives you one surface and one viewing angle. An L-shaped desk gives you two, which is great for space but creates a few common problems:

  • The corner trap. The 90-degree corner looks like the natural spot for your screen, but it pulls the monitor too close and cramps your posture. It's better used for accessories.
  • Two work zones. As you swivel between the two sides, your body position shifts. Without a flexible setup, one screen always feels a little off.
  • Sitting and standing. The right screen height changes a little between sitting and standing. A fixed riser can't follow that; an arm can.
  • Different depths. The two sides are often different depths (say 30" and 24"), so one screen ends up closer than the other unless you can adjust each one.

What is the correct monitor height for my body?

Treat your desk and screen as one setup. First, set your desk height so your elbows rest at about 90 degrees while typing. Then set your screen so the top is at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away. Use this table as a starting point:

Where should each monitor go on an L-shaped desk?

Keep your main screen directly in front of you on the larger surface. Put a second screen on the side you use next-most, at the same height. Leave the corner for accessories, not monitors.

Why is a gas spring monitor arm the best choice?

How do I set up my monitor step by step?

  1. Set the desk to your seated height, with elbows at about 90 degrees.
  2. Note your eye level, that's where the top of the screen should land.
  3. Clamp the monitor arm to the desk edge and attach your screen.
  4. Raise the screen so the top is at eye level, about 20–30 inches away.
  5. Tilt it back slightly to cut glare.
  6. Raise the desk to standing height and check the screen still lines up.
  7. Tidy the cables with cable management, and do a last posture check from head to wrists.

What is the correct monitor height for an L-shaped desk?

Can I use a regular monitor riser on a standing desk?

It's not ideal. A fixed riser can't change height when you switch between sitting and standing, so your screen ends up in the wrong spot half the day. A gas spring monitor arm adjusts instantly to both positions, which is why it works so much better on a sit-stand desk.

Where should I put my second monitor?

If you use it as much as your main screen, place the two side by side in a gentle curve on the main surface. If it's a backup screen, put it on the side surface at the same height as your main one, so you're not looking up or down when you glance over.

Do I need a separate arm for each side of the desk?

Not always. A dual arm mounted near where the two surfaces meet can cover both zones. If your screens sit far apart, two single arms give you more independent movement. It comes down to how far apart you want your monitors and how often you move them.

What is the 20-20-20 rule?

It's a simple way to rest your eyes: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It's especially helpful with multiple screens. Pair it with regular sit-stand breaks to stay comfortable through a long day.

Does the monitor arm's weight limit matter?

Yes. If your screen is heavier than the arm is rated for, it'll slowly droop and won't hold its height. Check your monitor's weight in its specs before you buy, and pick an arm rated a little above it for a firm, steady hold.
